What is PVD Coating?


PVD is the abbreviation for Physical Vapor Deposition. PVD coating is used to refer to a host of thin film deposition techniques in which there is a solid material that is vaporized in a vacuum environment and then deposited on substrates as a pure material or alloy composition coating. In the process of PVD coatings, the coating material is transferred at a single atom or at a molecular level. This means that PVD coatings allow a very high level of control over density, structure, and stoichiometry of the films. With the help of specific processes and materials, it is possible to develop those attributes that are specifically desired of the physical vapor deposited film such as adhesion, lubricity, or hardness. These coatings help in the reduction of friction and also serve as a barrier against any possible damage.
